HiPot Tests offered by JM elektronik
We test the manufactured devices according to a plan agreed upon with the customer, aiming to minimize the risk of defects in the most effective way. We have decided to expand our service offering to include HiPot testing. This type of testing helps to detect potential issues with electrical insulation in devices and components, identifying short circuits, breakdowns, and other defects that could lead to failures or electric shock. This makes it a crucial part of quality control for devices powered by mains voltage or higher. We invite you to explore our comprehensive range of electrical testing services.
In order to to provide customers with the highest level of performance assurance, we subject the PCBAs we produce to rigorous testing. The traditional ICT method enables comprehensive testing, verifying both individual components and their connections. This ensures precise quality control and effective fault detection.

For many years, we have also been offering our customers functional testing as an extension of our EMS services. This procedure involves simulating the duty cycle of a board in a device, including manual operation of buttons or a keypad. The test checks electrical signals and responses to manual operation, comparing the results with benchmark values to detect deviations caused by defects in components, assembly, software, or final integration.

Responding to our customers’ expectations, we have expanded our range of tests to include dielectric strength testing — HiPot (High Potential) tests.
HiPot tests involve applying a voltage significantly higher than its nominal operating voltage to the device or component under test. The purpose of this test is to ensure that the electrical insulation of the device is strong enough to prevent flashover or spark-over under extreme conditions. These tests are particularly important for cables, transformers, electric motors, integrated circuits, and other components that must meet strict safety standards.
We perform the following insulation tests:
HiPot AC Tests
These tests ensure that the insulation (housing) of the device will limit current flow in the event of a fault. Tests are performed at voltages of up to 5000V AC, 50 or 60Hz (regardless of the mains frequency of the measuring device). Voltage levels, rise times, fall times, and test durations are freely adjustable. Leakage current acceptance values are programmable.
HiPot DC Tests
These tests verify that the insulation (enclosure) effectively limits leakage current. Tests are performed at voltages of up to 6000V DC. Voltage levels, rise times, fall times, and test durations are freely adjustable. Leakage current acceptance values are programmable.
Earth Continuity Tests
These tests are typically conducted before HiPot tests. They verify the proper installation of the earthing cable to the enclosure using a current of 0.1A.
Insulation Resistance Tests
These tests determine the total insulation resistance of each product. They are conducted at voltages of up to 1000V DC, with a measurement range of up to 50 GΩ. Insulation resistance acceptance values are programmable. Voltage levels, rise times, fall times, and test durations are freely adjustable.
A board passes the HiPot test if there is no permanent damage to its components or the board itself during the test, and the measured leakage current remains below the set threshold. Carrying out these tests allows for an objective and comprehensive assessment of insulation strength. As a result, the customer receives records indicating the HiPot test outcome in the form of Pass/Fail, along with the specific measured insulation resistance value for each tested product.
HiPot tests can also detect issues such as PCB contamination, pathway design errors, laminate damage, or weaknesses in insulation. Their implementation helps to better supervise the improvement and streamlining ofhe production process, ultimately ensuring high product quality, and above all, product safety.
Early detection of poor insulation or micro-damage in dielectrics helps to prevent device failures later in use, which is crucial for the long-term reliability of end devices.
By eliminating voltage surges, HiPot testing reduces the risk of electrocution or even fire, significantly enhancing user safety.
