Further development of protective PCBA coating capabilities at JM elektronik

17 January 2025

The constant development of electronics, the digitisation of more everyday devices and the on-going miniaturisation of devices are increasing the demand for a variety of PCBA manufacturing services. Due to the variety of environments in which the circuits we produce operate, it is also necessary to expand the forms of board protection.

Coating has a protective function

One of the most common forms of protecting PCBAs from damage is conformal coating. In this process, a thin layer of protective lacquer is applied on the board. It protects both the leads and the installed components. The material acts as electrical insulation and protects the device from a range of harmful factors, such as high/low temperature, dust, moisture or chemical contaminants. The type of lacquer, as well as the method of application, is important throughout the process.

Painting methods

Dip coating

This method involves immersing the PCB into a container of lacquer. It is highly effective, but cannot be used in every case.

Spray coating

This is characterised by an uncomplicated application process. A high-precision spray head covers the entire surface of the PCB or a surface selected by the customer with lacquer. This method is characterised by high accuracy and repeatability when the process is carried out automatically.

In addition to these basic methods, the electronics industry also uses:

  • Micro spray varnishing,
  • Curtain coating,
  • Spiral spraying,
  • Spray coating.

By using a protective conformal coating, both the PCBA and the target device are at a lower risk of failure. This results in lower maintenance costs and a longer service life. As a result, coating has become the standard especially for more demanding applications.

We have been offering PCBA coating services to our customers since 2015. Moreover, we ensure that the board is protected in accordance with individual customer requirements. Numerous testimonials from satisfied customers confirm that the service we provide meets the requirements of applications.

We keep a close eye on trends in the electronics manufacturing market. So, we decided to launch another line dedicated to PCBA coating. To this end, we purchased a fully automated line for applying lacquers cured by natural drying. The drying oven which is part of the line allows this process to be radically accelerated. The powerful automatic spraying machine ensures a highly precise film thickness, a selective painting area and a fast process. Its most important feature is its selectivity. This allows us to coat a precise part of the board according to the customer’s specifications. Moreover, the machine has both a precision needle valve and a valve with several configuration modes: spiral, spray and swirl. The machine also allows a wide range of coating process parameters to be monitored. With the ability to programme the coating of a selected area and the precision of the valves allow for a wide range of applications.

The investment made allows us to expand our portfolio and increase our capacity to handle projects.
